For the submitted piece/s to be considered for the PEN/ Robert J. Dau Short Story Prize for Emerging Writers all below requirements must be met.

The submitted story is the author’s first published short story. a writer’s debut short story. “Debut” is defined as the writer’s absolute first fiction publication in any language, which has undergone an editorial review process and been accepted and published in a literary outlet that the author is not academically or professionally associated with.

The author has not had any other work of fiction previously published in either short or book-length form. (Note: authors who have previously self-published are still eligible; for the purpose of this prize, a debut is defined as a story that has undergone editorial review and been accepted and published in a publication with which the writer is not professionally associated.)

The author has not published one or more books which have undergone editorial review.

The submitted story has not been published by any other online or print publication or as part of a larger, book-length work.

The story was first written in and published in the English language. The submitted story is the original work and has not been previously published in any other language. Translations are ineligible
